Six week analysis to follow shortly.

3 thoughts on “‘What the public doesn’t hear’ project week 6

  1. I laughed when I saw Friday’s media release with eight paragraphs (324 words) dedicated to the pups listed as the very first item. By comparison, the homicide only had half the amount written about (5 paragraphs, 123 words). The staggering difference in the amount of details is telling.

But that’s PR at its finest: distract all the journalists with the cute puppies for 30 minutes before getting to the homicide. Did they think it was going to be the lead story for every outlet or something? Either way, it worked; Maralee Caruso could barely contain her giggling at all the cuteness on the evening news.

Although the pups do have some news value (though just how much is up for debate), I wish no media outlet actually reported on them. I think all the crime reporters should unite on some front to show the media office that you have a serious job to do and that you are going to hold them more accountable.

Keep up the good work on this project, James. It certainly is interesting.

    1. I take no issue with the WPS trumpeting the good things it does. I take issue with the optics of how it’s presented and in what context.

Matt, I can tell you this: the idea of the city’s crime reporters uniting wouldn’t work because some have a vested interest in the status quo.

The problems I see are not the same as what others might. And I’m sure some would have another — probably quite diverging — opinion about what’s presented here.

I guess the risk I run is that I look like a whiner. But as I’ve said again and again: If I’m waiting for the PIO to tell me something, there’s a problem with me.

  2. I wonder if the public knows that an assault with a weapon charge can be as simple as throwing a stuffed animal or an empty plastic slurpee cup at another person. Or- that FTC PO x3 with a theft under can be that the accused stole a package of cheese, but because he was on three probation orders, he gets three charges of FTC PO, as part of the PO is that he keep the peace and be of good behavior. Just because there’s FTC xY, doesn’t actually mean that the accused committed Y number of acts that were breaches of his probation order- especially on curfew conditions. If you’re not home for a curfew check, you get FTC x2- 1 for breaching that curfew, and 1 for not answering the door on a curfew check.

Everyone needs to remember that the morning in custody list is what people have been charged with, *by the police*. And our police aren’t lawyers- they don’t always know what the proper charge is or should be, and many don’t get advice before laying charges.
